Hints and tips for driveshaft oil seal

In order to replace the drive shaft oil seal. Drain a little of the gearbox oil. Jack up the rear of the car, remove the wheel from the relevant side. Remove the drive shaft retaining pins, these are accessed between the inner CV joint and the gearbox. They should be driven out with a suitable punch. There are two but they will come out as one. These should be renewed and re-sealed every time they are removed. Remove the bolt from the top, outer end of the top suspension link, to allow the suspension to fall outwards. The inner CV joint can then be pulled out of the gearbox. Lever out the seal and remove the 'O' ring on the shaft. Clean everything and check for damage to the sealing surface of the CV joint. Fit a new 'O' ring to the shaft, (Every time). Install the new seal, this is difficult to do without damaging the seal. We recommend the use of the seal inserter. This is particularly relevant as the left and right hand seals are pushed into different depths. The seal inserter has selectable rings to achieve the correct depth. Lubricate the seal and CV joint and insert the joint into the seal. This will only fit one way round. Carefully align the splines on the shaft and joint. Push the top of the rear suspension in and temporarily secure to the top link with a screwdriver or similar pushed through the bolt hole. Fit the large roll pin most of the way through the shaft having applied silicone sealer in the hole and on the pin. Apply more sealer and drive in the small pin. Drive both pins through so an equal amount, protrudes from each side of the CV joint. Re-connect the suspension, refit the wheel and tighten the bolt at 'ride height'. Top up the gearbox oil.
